Candidate for Austin Community College Board of Trustees, Place 8
A proud first-generation American whose father grew up in the shadow of the Shah in Iran, Stephanie Gharakhanian is an attorney, advocate, and community organizer making her first bid for public office, seeking to join Julie on the Austin Community College Board of Trustees. Stephanie came highly recommended by multiple of our Texas Advisory Board members -- and we can see why. She's smart, thoughtful, and through her role as a Special Counsel at the Workers Defense Project, has already developed a track record of working with legislators to get things done. Most recently, she has been a leader in the campaign to guarantee Texas workers the right to earn paid sick time so that they can care for themselves or a loved one when they are ill. She drafted the earned paid sick time policy that passed in San Antonio in August 2018 and led the last-minute negotiations to finalize the earned sick time ordinance that passed in Austin in February 2018. While she always has had a passion for public service, Stephanie has focused on getting things done vs. seeking the spotlight, and was recruited to run for this role -- squaring off against two opponents in her bid to join Julie as another strong voice for working people on the Board. We're thrilled to support Stephanie in what we know will be just her first run for public office.
